Making the record Contemporary Chaos Practices was an incredible experience and the fulfillment of a dream I had been having for a long time. It features a cast of 45 musicians, 8 singers and soloists Mary Halvorson, Kris Davis, Nate Wooley and myself. Two conductors alternate. Eric Wubbels conducts the through composed bulk of the music and Taylor Ho Bynum shapes some of the orchestral backgrounds played behind the soloists spontaneously with specified hand signals. Contemporary Chaos Practices was recorded by the legendary recording engineer Ron Saint Germain at Power Station, BerkleeNYC.

The critic Steve Smith writes in the liner notes: "The present recording, recorded in a studio by an ensemble of first-call freelancers led by two ideally sympathetic conductors, Eric Wubbels and Taylor Ho Bynum, provides eloquent evidence of what Laubrock has achieved. Both of her orchestral pieces – Vogelfrei, with its variegated textures, animated rhythms, swooping vocals, and inexorable momentum; and Contemporary Chaos Practices, where four instantly distinguishable soloists retain their individuality while negotiating a brilliantly rendered aural landscape – serve notice of an estimable composer who has something to say, and knows exactly how to say it."
