The musicians in Anti-House are some of my favorite “voices” in the NY creative music scene. I feel blessed to know Mary Halvorson, Kris, Davis, John Hébert and Tom Rainey, both as musicians and as friends.
The ever present combination of originality, sensitivity, speed of thought, ideas and experience make playing it a fulfilling experience every time for me. I compose for this ensemble with everybody’s particular way of playing in mind and try and blend composition with improvisation so that both are blurred.

Ingrid Laubrock – Saxophones

Originally from Germany, Ingrid Laubrock has been living in the UK since 1989 is and now residing in Brooklyn.

She performed and recorded with: Anthony Braxton, Dave Douglas, Kenny Wheeler, Tim Berne, Mark Helias, Michael Formanek, Mary Halvorson, Tyshawn Sorey, Evan Parker, Steve Beresford, John Edwards,Veryan Weston, Luc Ex,Django Bates’ Human Chain, Evan Parker, The Continuum Ensemble and others.

As part of the F-ire Collective, she won the BBC Jazz Award for Innovation in 2004,was nominated for the BBC Jazz Award for ‘Rising Star’ in 2005 and won a Fellowship in Jazz Composition by the Arts Foundation in 2006. She won the 2009 SWR German Radio Jazz Prize the and was one of the final nominees for the 2009 Westfalen Jazz Preis .

In 2011 Ingrid was commissioned to compose, rehearse and record for the prestigious New-Jazz Meeting, an annual production by the SWR and an institution since its inception in 1966 Her chosen octet featured Drew Gress, Mary Halvorson, Tom Rainey, Ted Reichman, Liam Noble, Tom Arthurs, Ben Davis and herself, the music will be released on Intakt Records in 2012.

Her current groups are Sleepthief,the new octet, the NY based quartet Anti-House and and the collaboration Paradoxical Frog with pianist Kris Davis and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. She is also part of the Tom Rainey Trio,Mary Halvorson’s Septet, Kris’ Davis Quintet, Catatumbo, Haste and Luc Ex’ Sol 6 and Sol 12.

Mary Halvorson - guitar

Mary Halvorson is a guitarist, composer and improviser living in Brooklyn. Since 2000 she has been performing regularly in New York with numerous groups and has toured Europe and the U.S. with Anthony Braxton and Trevor Dunn's Trio-Convulsant. Additionally, Halvorson has performed alongside and interpreted the music of Joe Morris, Nels Cline, John Tchicai, Taylor Ho Bynum, Matana Roberts, Tony Malaby, Elliott Sharp, Myra Melford, Andrea Parkins, Tyshawn Sorey, Marc Ribot and Jason Moran. Current projects for which Mary composes and performs with include The Mary Halvorson Trio with John Hebert and Ches Smith (Dragon's Head, Firehouse 12 Records, 2008); her quintet and her new septet, a chamber-music duo with violist Jessica Pavone (On and Off, Skirl Records, 2007); and the avant-rock band People (Misbegotten Man, I & Ear Records, 2007).

Kris Davis - piano

Kris Davis has quickly grown to become a vital contributor to New York's jazz scene. An artist exploring the balance between improvisation and composition, her writing and pianistic prowess have been described as 'adventurous' and 'refreshing'. Known for her work as a leader, Davis has released three records and toured extensively with her quartet featuring hailed saxophonist Tony Malaby, bassist Eivind Opsvik, and drummer Jeff Davis. Her newest trio project, Good Citizen, will be released on Fresh Sound Records in 2010 and features drummer Tom Rainey and bassist John Hebert. In addition to her projects as a leader, Davis has performed and/or recorded with Kermit Driscoll, Bill Frisell, Vinnie Colaiuta, John Hollenbeck’s Large Ensemble, Mat Maneri, Tyshawn Sorey, Theo Bleckmann, Andrew Cyrille, Paul Motian, Eric Revis, Steve Swell, Ingrid Jensen, Ron Horton, and Chris Speed. As a solo artist, Davis gave debut concerts this summer in Portugal, France and New York and released her solo recording ‘Aerial Piano’ on Clean Feed in 2011.

John Hébert - bass

John Hébert, bassist, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana where he first began to study double bass with Bill Huntington. John attended Loyola University of New Orleans where he received a full scholarship. After two years of performing with many of New Orleans greatest musicians and performing at various clubs including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival he moved to the New York tri-state area to attend William Paterson University where he continued his studies under bassist, Rufus Reid and received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. Since that time John has lived in New York City and has become a highly in-demand bassist. He has worked along side such world famous artists such as Andrew Hill, Lee Konitz, Paul Bley, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, David Liebman, Uri Caine, Greg Osby, Bill Stewart, Marc Copland, Fred Hersch, Maria Schneider, and many others. He also leads his own group, Byzantine Monkey, and has received high praise for his compositions and individual playing style. He is also mentioned in Downbeat’s 2006, 2007 and 2008 Critics Poll as a “Rising Star Acoustic Bassist”. From 2001 until Andrew Hill’s passing in 2007, John worked with Mr. Hill in various ensembles. John is also featured on Andrew Hill’s latest Blue Note release, “Time Lines” which was awarded “Record of the Year” by Downbeat’s Jazz Critics Poll in 2006. John has also performed around the world at festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Tampere Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Moers Jazz Festival, Ear Shot Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival and many others. He can also be heard in some of New York City’s most established venues such as The Village Vanguard, Blue Note, The Jazz Standard, Birdland, and the Iridium.

Tom Rainey drums

Percussionist Tom Rainey was born in Los Angeles, California in 1957.

Since moving to New York City in 1979 he has performed at festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe with a wide range of artists, including John Abercrombie, Ray Anderson, Tim Berne, Jane Ira Bloom, Ted Curson, Marc Ducret, George Gruntz,David Torn, Mark Helias, Fred Hersch, Andy Laster, Joe Lovano, Carmen McRae, Mike Nock, Simon Nabatov, New and Used, Matthias Schubert, Tom Varner, WDR Big Band, Ken Werner and Denny Zeitlin.

Tom Rainey received an National Endowment for the Arts grant to compose and perform a concert of music for percussion and drums featuring Dave Samuels and Arto Tuncboyaci.

Rainey's voluminous recording credits and the artistic caliber of the musicians he's supported would easily place him on the A-list of drummers closely identified with the New York City modern creative jazz scene roughly from the late '80s onward.

Tom Rainey recorded his debut album as a leader,’Pool School’ for Cleanfeed Records in May 2010.The CD also features Mary Halvorson on guitar and Ingrid Laubrock on saxophone.The trio’s follow-up CD ‘Camino Cielo Echo’ was just released on Intakt Records.
