Since 2017, the two virtuoso improvisers and unmistakable stylists Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Rainey have been celebrating music as a duo. A classic duo that releases energy, pulsating vividly while simultaneously withdrawing into intimacy. A celebration of successful interplay, burning for the moment. Brink is a fascinating example of jazz as the art of dialogue. In a profound and telepathic way, Laubrock and Rainey understand each other and speak to each other through the music. Making Monochromes was a three-year-long process that started in February 2020. It involved creating multi-layered sound mass tape pieces out of recorded sounds from Nate Wooley (trumpet), Adam Matlock (accordion), and percussion (Tom Rainey) and connecting them with solo, duo and quartet improvisations by Jon Irabagon, Zeena Parkins, Tom Rainey and I. The last segment on the record was performed live by JD Allen, David Breskin and I on Harry Bertoia's unique and amazing Sonambient Sculptures.

About the record: Early in 2020 as the pandemic was forcing us to isolate from our friends and live performing, we began a weekly series of duets which we called “Stir Crazy”. For over a year, we offered these home recordings free of charge on Bandcamp as a way to stay connected to our supporters and to continue developing new music. After 60 episodes we retired the series to begin preparing for our next studio recording "Counterfeit Mars".

This record is the culmination of that year of uncertainty, isolation and concentrated duo explorations. The music combines compositions as well as improvisations and hopefully conveys our deepened connection to both.
